American Bottom
This small campsite is part of the Willamette River Water Trail, and this is a spot for serious campers because there are not a lot of amenities. You will find a seasonal toilet, some picnic tables, and fire pits. There are absolutely gorgeous river views here, and this area is open year-round. Call for park information at 800-551-6949.
This is an interesting place. The Willamette River is one of only a few big rivers in the United States that flows north and is an amazing place to see wildlife. The great blue heron is easy to find here, and you will also see other types of waterfowl, like ospreys. There is also good fishing all over the place, including good bank fishing at the Multnomah Channel.
Champoeg State Park
This old pioneer town is now a museum, a state park, and a beautiful place with cabins, yurts, and campsites with lots of hiking trails nearby. You can enter at 8239 Champoeg Rd NE in St. Paul, and the area is open all year round. The site was the center of Oregons first provisional government, and today includes a natural area of forests, fields, and wetlands where you can really get away from it all, as well as historic structures.
There are six tent sites, six yurts, six cabins, 54 electric sights with water, and 21 full hook-up sites for RVs. There are flush toilets, hot showers, firewood, and ice for sale nearby, as well as a special hiker and biker camp. The area has paved trails for walking or biking, historic landmarks to explore, lots of fishing and kayaking opportunities, a disc golf course, picnic sites, and unpaved hiking areas. There are more than 130 bird species that called this area home, so expect to see some avian wildlife.
